Adam and I spent our weekend with the spotlight on Snowball. We hopped into the Liberty post-work on Friday and headed down the road to Kansas City. We spent the night at our friend Michael’s house and slept in until 9:00 am … if I hadn’t been nudged by my oh-so full bladder to bust out of bed, I would have most certainly peed my pants with excitement. Sleeping in is one of those special somethings I have sorely missed since Snowball has put his/her stamp on me and I was so freakin’ pumped that we didn’t stir at seven as has become our most recent m.o. (I am certain all of you mothers reading this are laughing and saying, “Oh just you wait… you’ll never sleep in again.”)
Following a sweet slumber, we took to the town. We hit up several stores including a consignment maternity market where I was able to get some jeans for $20 and a few cute tops, USA Baby where we encountered a fantastic salesperson and a rocker we just couldn’t pass up, PB Kids where we nabbed a green lamp sans shade, Mimi Maternity where everything was horribly overpriced and the old standby, the Gap. I was on the hunt for some of the babymama basics and found enough to keep my previously mentioned a.m. gripefests to a minimum for at least a few weeks or until my belly bowls me over … whichever should come first. Adam was along for the ride on all of it stating that it was a day for Snowball and because I am the one inhabiting Snowball, it was, in turn, focused on me. Seriously, I don’t know what I did to get Adam but I strongly suggest that all women get one of him before taking a ride on the baby bus(he is mine. get your own.).
We really milked the weekend for all it was worth and were able to locate some nuggets for the nursery. As of now, we know that Snowball’s pad will definitely include a rocker, crib skirt and lamp … the rest, well, we’ll see. We checked out cribs, dressers, strollers and all that jazz.
Turns out, babies need a load of stuff. This is why, I believe, people should get licensed to have a child. The questionnaire/exam could test as to whether or not you know what you are going to need to buy for your little one, how many hours a day you would have to be responsible for the child and if you’ve ever left your purse somewhere and not recovered it. I think these questions, among others, could really assist parents-to-be in the process of “getting it” before “getting to it”.
We spent our Sunday afternoon at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch. Had we not brought Snowball along for the trip, it would have been a nearly 5 year dose of birth control. Children screaming and running all across the acres, parents with empty glazed looks washed over their faces, pumpkin personnel who are clearly so over the visitors of this halloween haunt … a spooky setting indeed. We stood in line after line watching parents with their offspring. At one point on our hayrack ride extravaganza, I turned to Adam and whispered, “Do days like today make you feel really normal?”.
We rummaged through the patch and picked out 3 pumpkins… one Daddy, one Mama and one baby. By the end of the day, I had enjoyed morsels of a carmel apple, two cups of apple cider, cookie bites and more. Snowball had to have been in a state of euphoria! A veritable buffet of sweetness. Upon first examination, I determined that we would never let Snowball know that Vala’s existed… the cars, the lines, the process of it all … but I imagine that all of the fanfare will call our names next year as we have Baby Brehm in hand. All in all, Adam and I had a great fall weekend and are really falling for our little fetus.
