Barrett Brehm is now over 4 months old but let me tell you, for this mama, it feels like he’s 7. There is no way that the first two months of his life could only be two months behind me because now that we have Saturday Baby every day, it feels as if the screaming, leg punching and back arching moments happened a lifetime ago.
I was explaining to a friend the other day that the screamfest filled first months of Barrett’s life were only compounded by the fact that Barrett came early and came little. I can’t tell you how many people responded with envy and excitement when we discovered that Barrett would be making an early entrance and how many people told me that I was lucky to not have to endure the last hellish month of being pg. Let me tell you, if keeping Barrett inside of me for another month would have made him more comfortable once he arrived, I believe I would happily trade one for the other (though I know I can’t be certain). But because this is the story that has been written for double B’s life, someday when he’s towering over us and eating cheese and butter like it’s his job, we will repeat over and over what a fussy peanut he once was.
Yesterday we visited our dear Dr. Dek for Barrett’s 4 month check. She was so excited to see Barrett and we couldn’t appreciate her enthusiasm more. As my sister-in-law says “Once you have kids, you don’t care if people like you but they darn well better think your child is the best thing ever”. Dr. Dek ooh’d and ahh’d over Barrett’s expressions … his furled brow, his sparkling eyes and his full-body smiles… she soaked up every morsel of Barrett and as proud parents do, we grinned from ear to ear. I thought to myself as I anxiously watched the numbers climb on the scale that this would be the day that Barrett grew in, up and out and that, to us, he would never again be the wee infant we once knew (*tear*). Although many strangers respond in disbelief when I share that Barrett is 4 months old by stating “He’s just a peanut”, Barrett certainly is the biggest baby we’ve ever had and yesterday, he showed his stuff weighing in at a 10 pounds 11 ounces and stretching out to 22 and an 1/8 inches.Still somewhat small but very mighty, Barrett rolled right over when put on his tummy … lifted himself up mightily on his elbows … whatever head lag is, he’s over that … and his spitout reflex is pretty well outta the picture. We talked shots, sleep, cereal and soy and have decided to take a shot at reintroducing soy again in the weeks ahead (surely a great post to come) and then cereal shortly following. All in all, a rave review for our officially big baby boy and a mommy and daddy, full of joy.
