It’s Apparent You’re a Parent…

When my sister and I were children, we absolutely delighted in reading the comics each Sunday morning. We would split up the pages so each of us could read at the same time although each of us were in pretty good agreement about which strips were the best. We both always read Peanuts as it was the first on the front page, looked forward to seeing what LuAnn was up to that week and always skipped the then-over-my-head Non Sequitor. As a grown-up, I never pass up the opportunity to grab the funnies when at my parent’s place to check out what all of my old friends are up to and the one strip that remains the most sentimental to me has got to be Bil Keane’s Family Circus {What will little Billy get into this week?}. One of my all time favorite comic collections of Keane’s is titled “It’s apparent you’re a parent” and as I embark on parenthood, I find myself mentally collecting my own parent-isms … times at which I think “crap. it’s apparent I’m a parent.” . While I am sure that this is so overdone, I decided to share a few that I’ve compiled to date:


It’s Apparent You’re a Parent 

…when you don’t get carded when you’re buying beer at the store where they always card you, likely because you have your baby slung to the front of you… and also likely that the store clerk believes that even if you aren’t 21, you deserve a beer.

…when you’ve determined that waking up at 7:15 is a gift from God because that means you slept in {Thank you, Adam}.

…when you take all of your getting-ready foo-foo time making your baby look cute and end up slapping on some mascara, deodorant and chapstick in the car en route to appointments, play dates and mall trips.

…when the smell of a fresh box of diapers brings a smile to your face {why can’t adult underpants smell so dreamy?}.

…when your entire life is scheduled in three hour chunks… baby/boob time.

…when you change a diaper and then an hour later realize you have been walking around with poop on your cheek since said diaper change.

…when you say things like “do you have poopies?” to people other than your baby (husband, friends, strangers, etc.)

…when designing dinner is a day-long task … chop onions during tummy time, dice tomatoes during nap time, cut up bread when babe is chillin’, sling baby for cooking and assembly.

…when you peruse the newest Pottery Barn catalog only to discover that none of their show rooms have burp cloths, exersaucers or baby blankets as accent items.

…when your free time is spent doing a poop-n-pump.

…when you pray that you’re doing the very best things you can for your child every single moment … and yet feel like you could be doing so much more.

…when you’ve committed Good Night Moon, I Love you, good nite and The Going to Bed Book  to memory but can’t for the life of you figure out what the Black-Eyed Peas are saying in their newest chart topper.

…when you sway back and forth even when someone else is holding your beautiful bundle.

…when you see a child walking down the street and think “I can’t believe her mother let her leave the house like that.”
…when seeing your spouse holding your baby is as much an aphrodisiac as candles and flowers. 

…when you judge people less for the parenting choices they choose because you know they are just doing what they believe is best for their babe.

…when your camera is filled with picture after picture of your child doing absolutely nothing but yet you believe it to be the most incredible collection of snapshots you’ve ever laid eyes on.

…when you nearly pee your pants and become giddy with excitement when your child does something new only to realize that you just encouraged them to repeat said behavior i.e. – pulling your hair.

…when you find yourself telling five year-olds who are playing dolls that they shouldn’t have babies until they are married and ready for the responsibility.

…when you think other parents even cooler people than you ever gave them credit for because they have 2, 3 or more children and you are just trying to figure out one.

Thank you to Bil Keane for making me aware of the many mommy-isms that I’ve already adopted. I’m sure there will be many more, with each and every day…

I’d like to dedicate today’s post to my fabulous parents who today, celebrate 36 years of wedded bliss and to thank them for being such wonderful ‘rents. To all parents (anticipating, expecting or practicing) reading, please feel free to impart your parent-isms!
