I thought that I loved weekends before but I have to tell you, now that I am a domestic administrator, I am in love with weekends … in fact, if I were a first-grader, I would put this in the “I want to marry weekends” category. I know people think that I am just silly but I have always wished that there were a way that Adam and I could spend every moment together and that longing has increased ten-fold post Barrett. In my idealistic opinion, it would just be a better world if you could spend more time with your family and friends and less time doing business with strangers but alas, money makes the world go round and thus, work must be done.
This last weekend, grandma and grandpa Brehm watched Barrett on Friday night {Thank You!} and Adam and I had a date night. Although eating out these days is an adventure as I share my food aversions with each and every server we see, it’s still a treat to get out and enjoy the company of the love of my life. Prior to heading out to dinner, Adam and I each had a beer because, well, because it was Friday and then we ate a delicious dinner at Julio’s where each of us snagged a sugary margarita. It seems that currently I am just about the cheapest date ever because after the beer and the margarita, not only was I well into tipsy but also I was so full I could barely finish my food. Following dinner, we took in a showing of “The Hangover” and while I must say it was wildly inappropriate, I must also say it was highly entertaining and completely hilarious. If you don’t mind a little crude humor and are looking for a good giggle, I suggest you see it. If you do mind a little a crude humor and are a fun-hater then cross it off your list. (For any of you breastfeeding mamas out there who are questioning my imbibing, after returning home, I pumped n dumped).
Saturday morning, Barrett woke bright and early and Adam hung out with him while I slept in peaceful slumber until 8ish. We ventured downtown for brunchy brunch at a little hole-in-the-wall Omaha original, Dixie Quicks {delish!} and then took a stroll around the Old Market Farmers Market. There are few things more refreshing than a summer morning checking out fresh produce, brightly colored flowers and local flavor. We then took a trek to the annual Taste Of Omaha event which I dubbed the trash of Omaha. Don’t get me wrong, the food was great and it was nice to get out in Omaha but the “ambiance” was intriguing at best. Adam and I determined that the local flare presented an excellent opportunity to teach Barrett about manners, cleanliness and what exactly is appropriate clothing for a public outing. I’m not sure that Barrett understood but it certainly kept us entertained for some time.
Sunday brought church, brunch and shopping for Barrett’s baptism outfit. I have a dear friend whose mother makes baptismal dresses but Adam was not about to have our son wearing a dress, so we bought one of those ridiculous looking little-man white suits for Barrett to get splashed in. I’m currently trying to figure out what he could be for Halloween that would allow me to repurpose the 40 dollar investment we made in the silky white suit.
You may be asking yourself why I just told you every detail about our weekend … but it’s because it was just so normal… just a nice little break from the rest of life, a lovely offering to the otherwise hustle and bustle that the weekdays bring. No crazy schedule, no place to be, just some time for mommy, daddy and baby… the three amigos. I kept thinking I was living in the alternate universe of Frank the Tank in Old School when he rejects chugging a beer at a college party because he has a busy Saturday planned with his wife, stating “we’re going to Home Depot…maybe Bed Bath and Beyond…i don’t know if we’ll have enough time”. There will surely be crazier weekends ahead but with our little four month old Barrett bundle, we are enjoying the most normal of moments/hours/days and weekends.
