I absolutely love the movie. Especially the last shot of the flick … panning out on Melanie Griffith through the window of a massive skyscraper, Let the River Run blaring in the background. In my opinion, there is no other genre that wins out over a romantic comedy. The girl gets the guy and rocks the gig. What could be better to watch than that?
As I headed off to the office for my first day after a long summer break, I left behind me, the Barrett Bible … a comprehensive guide to all things Barrett. From wake-up to diapering to naps to food to snacks to what to do if he hiccups {okay, perhaps not, but you get the gist}. Similar to a notebook one might put together in preparation for maternity leave, my book on B is a bit over-the-top and too informative … outlining every bit of minutia that makes up Barrett’s days. But as I told the n-Anne-y before I left, I’m a bit neurotic because Barrett has been my every moment for the last 16 months. And, while I’m fairly certain Anne thinks I’m overly-anxious and a micro-momager, I’m good with it because after all, B’s my finest work to date.
Completely in the Working Girl frame of mind, as I drove to work last Wednesday, with sixteen months having come and gone since I have been a true working girl, it seemed only fitting to rock out to a little Carly Simon. No, I did not download the song for this specific purpose, it happens to double as my oh-so-special sorority serenade and thus I have it on many a mix cd. I love it. It fires me up and gets me going. If I had a soundtrack for my life, this song would be numbers 6, 8 and probably 17 and 20 {if I were to predict the future}. As I turned another page in the rousing story that is my life and began a new-ish chapter, I rocked out to Carly Simon and drank coffee out of a big girl cup. I was off to work. I cranked up the volume.
And I did the same, Thursday and Friday. And again today.
Each day, upon returning home, not only has Barrett been in one piece but also smiling, giggling, gleeful. Barrett loves Anne and Liz and hasn’t seemed to skip a beat. The transition from full-time stay-at-homer to part-time someone-else’s-employee has been a good one. I was amped to head back to work today after a fun-packed Monday and Tuesday and just as true to Carly Simon’s hit, there have been moments over the past week that I’ve felt my heart singing a bit more than usual. The balance of working at home as a mom and working at an office seems to fit me right and, although it’s only the beginning of something fresh and new, I’ve got a good feeling that for the next nine months, I can get the guys and the gig.
