Wednesday night, I decided I ought to start putting together Jonah’s teacher gifts. I mean, his last day before break was Thursday, so it seemed like as good of time as any. I’d picked up the pieces on Tuesday, all I needed to do was bag them up and stick a little note with each one. I intended to keep it low key and then I started monkeying around and bam! I’d spent longer than I’d ever intended to spend making little notes. Do you ever find yourself doing that? Taking something that should have taken 4 minutes instead takes you 17 hours?
So I got them all bagged, organized, collated, and alphabetized {I kid, I kid}. But I did bag them and set them in a place where I absolutely would not forget them the next morn.
Yesterday was a normal school day. Breakfast making, boy corraling, and breastfast feeding, and we were off like a prom dress. We all loaded in the car+gifts, picked up our carpoolee, and dropped B and Co. off at school. As I drove up to Jonah’s pre-school, we listened to Holly Jolly Christmas and were both singing along while Harrison boomed out a few mamamamas and bahahahabahahahas. I noticed that the traffic seemed very light. I checked my car clock, once again, thinking that it had somehow misfunctioned and I’d gotten there much later than I’d thought. I pulled into the parking lot and put the car in park.
Hmmmm.
Weird that there are no lights on.
And only two other cars I recognize.
And no teacher holding the door.
And now it’s 5 minutes past the time where there should be lights on.
And cars to recognize.
And a teacher. Holding the door.
Criminitily. There’s no school today.
Yeah. So there was no school. No school for Jonah. No gift giving. Because the last day of the semester, was Wednesday. And just myself, and two other parents, didn’t read the teacher’s email at the beginning of the week. Awesome. I think it’s always really great to be that parent who totally blows off the email saying that school is not in session. And who counts down with her kids alllll week with the number of days until break and then poof ! Break already happened. That’s some good stuff right there. Because, ya know, I’m a stay-at-home-mom… some people might say that the primary function of my job is to get my kids to and fro, keep the calendar current, and stay on top of all of the administrative stuff. Oops. I have a feeling my annual review might not go very well this year. Guessing that neither Clark Griswold nor I will be putting in a pool. I blame the baby. I think I still have a little bandwidth on that excuse, right?
Thankfully, we did have family school last night, which I did manage to include on the monthly calendar and so we’d been playing it up all week. So we were able to distribute a few gifts, and I got to admit to being a complete lunatic. WINNING! And, we made an incredible gingerbread house. And by incredible, I mean that Jonah and Barrett went with the more is more philosophy when constructing it so if it’s still standing by the weekend, I’ll be pretty impressed. I’m really more into eating gingerbread houses anyway so I think that should work out just fine.
So… maybe my new year’s resolution for 2015 should be to find my damn ducks and put them back in a row.
But really… what fun would that be?
And since it’s Friday… you can get a double shot of BabyOnTheBrehm thoughts. Check out my post over at Her View From Home highlighting our recent caroling outing. And let it be a reminder that if you say yes to your kids, it’s basically written in blood.
Happy Friday, friends!
