A week ago yesterday, the oldest was finishing up Kindergarten.
And the middlest had an end of year celebration.
And then, after a lunch with friends, we loaded the car and headed south, departing at 3 o clock in the afternoon. It was one of those days that felt like 100 lives were lived and it wasn’t even dinner time yet.
We drove from Omaha to Topeka and stopped for grub and leg stretching and jam changes, and then, back on the road. We discovered the boys are NOT into car sleeping. When thrashing, crying, and confusion was the name of the after dark car ride game.
And so, finally called it a night around 2 am, when we pulled into Fort Worth.
Around 9:30 the next morn, the last of the littles awoke,
We booked a room through the hoteltonight app for $79. Winning! |
and by 11, we were on the road, once again,
southbound for Austin… The place where we first lived as a married couple and made friends that will last a lifetime.
And once we hit the city limits, we hit the ground running. We ate at some our fave restaurants
Avoided the brunt of the weather warnings
Enjoyed the outdoors
Spent some time burning off energy inside
Tried some new places that soon became new faves

Checked an item off of the oldest’s wish list
Texas State Capitol |
He’s declared he wants to see every single one. Eek. |
And saw faces that although we don’t see often, made us feel like no time had passed
Dinner at the sunset capitol, Oasis. |
The sunset was lackluster. The company was fab. |
We did a lot of go-go-going
Fruit and veggie pouches for the win! |
Until it was time to drink up and get on the road again.
We said our goodbyes to Austin, and headed north… And spent some time with other familiar faces along the route
Hanging with fam. |
And after getting on the road at 9 o clock in the morn on Thursday, driving through Texas, Oklahoma,
Worst state sign ever. |
This should be the state sign instead. |
Kansas,
Home home on the range. |
stopping in Topeka
Jason’s Deli stop |
and making one last important stop in Tecumseh, we pulled into the drive at home sweet home at 10 o clock in the PM.
With 30 hours in the car, there’s a lot of time for talking, and thinking. And as we traveled, I found myself wondering how life might be different today if we had not left Austin. It’s impossible, I think, to never wonder what our lives would be like today if. If we hadn’t left Austin. If the hubs wouldn’t have left this job or that job. If we hadn’t have moved to Omaha instead of our original decision of Kansas City. If I had gone back to work and stayed at work. If our third pregnancy had gone differently. If if if. But this trip was clarifying for me. As we trecked down the road together, I took lots of time to note that all of where we are now came from where we’ve been together. That we are truly right where we are supposed to be.
With our three little dudes, sandwiched bim bam boom.
And our current state of somewhat chaos
we’re writing our family story, each step of the way.
And at the end of the day, we’re pretty happy with this life. With the good life.
Our first full family vacay is in the books. And we’ve checked two more states off toward our family goal: see all 50 states before the youngest goes to college. Because life’s a great adventure… if you’re willing to explore!
