August has been an intense whirlwind at our house. Or rather, our houses. I know, I know. I will alllmost be done documenting this moving situation but I’d be remiss not to chronicle this time in our lives. Because while, from buy to sell, all told, the move has only been a less than 1/4 of a year process, it has definitely taken a toll on my sanity as of late. Add in the kids starting school, me being under the weather, and just feeling really crabby, and for much of the month of August, I was in quite the funk. Because sometimes, sometimes we just get there.
But it’s a new week. It’s nearly a new month. And sitting in church yesterday, I was inspired to start this week off with a list.
A list of goodness. Not a list of “reasons I hate Mondays” or “reasons I didn’t want to get out of bed this morning”. But a list of some of the best good things in my life.
I would gander to say that most people I know are familiar with the 23rd Psalm even if only because of the part that makes a cameo in Gangsta’s Paradise. I’m not getting preachy here because that just isn’t my style. In fact, I rarely talk about my faith because to me, somehow, it’s one of the most personal things I have. But I am here to tell you that there is a lesser noticed gem in the 23rd Psalm, one that our pastor reviewed with us yesterday and it is such a great little reminder. Such a great little nugget. And it’s the little verse in there that says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life”.
Man. That’s a good thought, isn’t it. Whether you are into The Big J or not, I think we can all agree that the idea of goodness can be universal. The idea of good people. Good thoughts. Good meals. Good times. These are things that humanity can get behind.
And how many of us, even when in a funk… even when the car won’t start or we spill our coffee or the kids are being a trainwreck or the house is a mess… even when life feels not quite as familiar and happy as we’d like, how many of us have goodness we get to experience every day?
So today… today I made a list. Similar to a list that the Pastor shared in one of his slides. A list of 10 of the Best Good Things I get to live.
Because Mondays are fresh starts. Good days to dust off the funk and be thankful for the goodness. Because there’s a time to feel down. There’s a time to feel sorry for yourself. And then, there’s a time to be grateful for all the things that are right.
So I challenge you today. If you want. If you feel like it will help you start the week or next month out right. Make your list. Write out your best good things. Even if it’s only 3 things. Even if you want to write 50. And put the list where you will see it. In your cube. On the fridge. On your dashboard. On your phone memos. Write it on your arm if you’d like. Because surely goodness is following you. Sometimes we just have to stop and recognize it.
What are your best good things?
