I’m a believer. I am. I am a 33 year old mother of three children and I am a believer. I know. It’s hard for some people to wrap their minds around. “How can you believe in something you can’t see?” “How can you comfortably tell your kids that something you’ve never seen yourself is actually real?” “How can reindeer fly all over the globe in one night and yet, not lose their hooves?”
These are all fair questions. But yes. I believe in Santa Claus.
I always have. I was the 13 year old girl at the junior high lunch table who was just sure that Santa was legit. And I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
I believe because I believe in magic. And in goodness. And in miracles.
I believe that, at Christmas, a whole lot of people start to be just a little nicer. A little kinder. A little more thoughtful. And I believe that if the spirit of something… If the mere idea of someone’s presence can do that for people, why not believe?
But I think, if you do believe, you can’t just stop there. You can’t just believe. You have to do. Because I think we all know that Santa is exceptionally busy. I think we all know that there are people with plenty and people who want. I think we all know that not every little one has shiny paper and bows under their tree. So today, I’m going to make a crazy request. I am going to pull the cancer card. I’m asking for a favor. I am going to ask you help out the Jolly Man in red.
Today, can you be Santa? For one person. Be Santa. Drop a small donation off at an emergency pantry, tuck a check under a windshield wiper, leave someone a bigger tip than normal, drop a gift off for a child who may not have one in sight. Do something sort of extraordinary today. Be Santa. Because Santa is in each of us. If we just believe.
Practice radical kindness today. Send a package through Amazon Prime if you can’t get out of the house. Send your aunt in the nursing home a video text telling her how much you love her. Drop a coffee by for a new mama who hasn’t slept in days. Make someone’s day, without them even knowing it was you.
Be Santa. Just for today. It doesn’t have to be a huge thing. You don’t have to change the course of the world. Just do one nice thing. Spread goodness. Share Christmas. Be Santa. Today.
I’m a believer. Because I know the hearts of those around me. And I see Santa the whole year through. In each of you.
Practice goodness. Make believers. Spread cheer. And be Santa.
