I used to love winter. I did. It was my soul season, if there ever were such a thing. I loved turtlenecks, and mittens, and drinking hot cocoa with peppermint schnapps with my roomies. But now… I reallllly think I might hate it. I find the constant greige much less romantic, I have great disdain for the sludge that is coated on my car, and I am really over the cold that is getting passed around the family. Sorry, winter… we had a good run. But you are killing this mama’s mojo. So I think it’s time for you to leave.
Winter in the midwest is an adventure. Winter with kids in the midwest is a scene. I am fairly certain the notorious Sock Monster who inhabits my dryer and eats socks has now taken to eating gloves and mittens as well. And no one seems to have them in stock at this point in the season, which is perfect considering it could very likely still be snowing in May. My children hate coats and as such, every single morning must include a discussion covering the ramifications of frostbite on their digits and also, the ramifications on my status as their mother if they are out in 10 below temps sans coats. Add to the coat issue the fact that it is no longer advised that children wear them in their car seats, which means you are doing the coaty pokey — taking them in and out of their jackets — each time the car starts and stops. And then, there’s the fact that baby cannot even breathe outside. It is THAT cold on many mornings that the air quite literally takes his breath away {TOP GUN forever!} so the whole it’s so great to be able to run errands during the day with just one kid is pretty much notgonnahappen. ANNNNND cabin fever central.
I know… I’m such a whiner. But really, winter, I’m like, forget you.
To balance all of my negativity, I did come up with two positives to this frigid tundra that we are living in…
1. My Target spending is very appropriate during the winter months as the baby not being able to breathe outdoors keeps me from going to buy the candle/dollar spot item/stationery/dry erase markers that, in nicer weather, I seem to so desperately NEED.
And that is pretty much everything I could come up with…
Today is supposed to be above the teens so I will take that and run with it. I will be turning up the heat, putting on the steel drum music, and thanking winter for its cold milk sippies.
