Hello there again and welcome back to the One Mantel Two Ways mini-series! {also of note… I realized that I spelled mantel wrong EVERYWHERE. I swear, chemo stole my brain cells. So hopefully, I’ve updated EVERYWHERE!}.
…
Ohhhh… wasn’t yesterday fun? And today, we’ve got another fabulista mantle re-design to share from Omaha’s Interior Design Firm bright and beautiful, Linsey Lisowyj {no. that is not a typo. Lisowyj is her last name. It is pronounced Lees-oh-vay} ASID, NCIDQ.
I met Linsey through my sorority in college. I was drawn to her immediately. She has always been so full of joy and it shows in her design aesthetic. She is like walking sunshine. One of those people you wish you could carry in your pocket for life and fashion advice. Linsey works as an NCIDQ-certified at the Interior Design Firm located at 114th & Dodge in Omaha. Linsey rocks at design because among her many talents, she uses bold colors and layers with patterns — in a way that only she can! She is very open to her client’s ideas BUT she will also help you go out of your comfort zone if you’re up for it! And… I was able to hire her for a couple hours to help me with my front room re-design in my old house… aka… the only room that had any real design elements to it, outside of the paint colors… which Brianne chose. Hmmm… I’m seeing a pattern here.
Heeeeeeeere’s Linsey…
Isn’t she just a beautiful joy blossom? And yes, those are her real teeth, just in case you were wondering.
Remember Mama Brehm’s {lack of} design?
And I know, friends, I know, you’re waiting with baited breath… so wait no further!
Linsey’s Mantel:
I meaaaaaaan… shut the front door. The colors here!! I never. Ever. Ever. Ever would have been brave enough to call that gorgeous art piece mine. But Linsey brought this one-of-a-kinder from her firm to show how you can transform the style of a mantel with one big bam! And I LOVE it. Love. Drool.
The details…
Statement pieces.
Can I tell you that when I originally wrote this, I wrote, “Big Pieces”? Ha! Linsey kindly corrected it to “Statement” because she likes to pick pieces that truly speak to the eyes! Linsey and I discussed that often people shy away from spending money on things like vases or bowls but if you are going to purchase something that is going to make a statement like the mustard pottery pieces, put a few bucks in the kitty. These pieces are from the Interior Design Firm rather than Gordman’s or the like because often times, it’s hard to find large statement pieces that are also versatile at discount stores.
Color, color, color.
Pink pillows?! I would not know how to mix the colors Linsey brought into the space. I would never have known to pair them with my traditional mantle. It would have been out of my comfort zone. But in working with a pro, you know that the use of colors, sizes, textures and materials will be done just so. It looks effortless here, doesn’t it? And really… I don’t think they’re technically pink… I bet they are some gorgeous name for lavender or violet or purple. But you get it, right? Just not a color I would know how to mix but I love that Linsey paired them with the smooth brown leather and to me, they look so natural there.
Seasonal items.
When Linsey appeared with the weathered white-washed lanterns, I thought magnolia farmhouse… beach… summer… midwestern fall pumpkin patch outings… But guess what? True design transcends season. These girls aren’t just going on Pinterest, downloading a bunting and calling it good, they are creating a feeling. She added the wooded lanterns for texture in the space and depth on the base of the fireplace and she knocked my socks off with that idea. And lanterns are EVERYWHERE right now!
Height.
Linsey immediately filled the space from the mantel up the wall. It draws the eye up, makes the ceiling seem high, and really highlights the wall. She picked the very perfect piece… using EXACTLY the right amount of wall. And yes, that art is the bomb.diggity. I want it. I want to put it over my bed and stare at it every night. Or even just on my mantel.
I also love how she chose the art with the dark mix of colors but somehow, the space looks bright!
Small details.
Velvety pillows add a pop of color to the white brick. The green plant peeking out behind the pillow is stunning, right? And those colors against the black and white backdrop… be still my beating heart. Oh and then, smooooooth leather basket with those pillows cozily stuffed inside?! YES. All over, yes. Purchased from Pottery Barn, Linsey pulled these items together with the idea that one could easily trade out pillows on a whim, mixing and matching to your heart’s content! Heart-eyed emoji central.
White-washed lanterns add texture.
And that mustard yellow is warm and inviting but also, unexpected! It pulls the art colors together amaaaaazingly.
Three simple pieces make one giant statement. And those balls… they were some I had lying around and Lins just scooped ’em up, and plopped them in the bowl and it feels like they belong there, right?
My fave thing about Linsey’s space… the color! Linsey’s color choices, honestly, would not normally be what I would be drawn to but seeing them on the mantel… seeing how it totally changes the vibe in the room… I was inspired to think of how I need to go out of my zone in other areas of my house. I also love love love that she was able to find such great complements to the painting like the mustard accents and the pillows! And in watching Linsey work, I loved seeing how she used things like whitewashed lanterns with such an incredible art statement piece… to my untrained eye, she puts random pairings together and they work.
I want to serve some sort of tiny-spooned amuse bouche in this room. And clink champagne glasses.
A little bit more about Linsey Lisowyj, designer extraordinaire
Why Linsey loves working on design with her families
As a professional designer, I realize that I’m not only being hired to get a job done or make wishes come true, I’m being invited into one’s personal life. I like to think that I help people live happier by creating environments or shaping spaces that make people feel good.
What Linsey sees as the biggest trend in design currently
When given the opportunity and creative freedom, I choose bold colors and uniquely pair them with one another (like the pink/lavender pillows and mustard vases paired with the cobalt and gray in the artwork). At Furniture Market in Highpoint, NC (think NY Fashion Week for Interior Designers), matte gold finishes, farmhouse style furnishings, Tibetan lamb’s wool, clear acrylic accents, colors such as Emerald Green, pale pink, white, gold are all currently trending.
Linsey’s fave place for home decor
For statement pieces, shopping at a design studio, such as the Interior Design Firm, is where I begin; then as the budget or design direction calls for it, I mix in pieces purchased from the HomeGoods, Pottery Barn, or Pier1.
One thing she loves to infuse into any space
Any shade of violet whether in artwork, wall color, or upholstery… it’s my signature color and because I love it so, I’ve discovered that it’s really quite versatile and unexpected.
Thank you, Linsey! I loved watching you in action, friend! One hundred and twenty-two percent.
