This is Daisy. When I was going through treatment, the Buffett Cancer Center was being built on the UNMC campus as part of Nebraska Medicine. During a tour of the new center, I got to meet this little bit of sunshine. Daisy is a typical 10-year-old girl. She loves doing art. She adores bright, happy things. Her favorite colors are pink, purple, and yellow (because she loves the sunshine). She loves to go to school. And she loves her family.
In 2016, Daisy went through treatment for Ewing’s Sarcoma. It is a rare bone cancer. She has gone through biopsies, chemo, radiation, and been in the hospital over the last two years more than she has been out.
She was declared cancer-free after her treatment. She got to go back to school. She got to turn from 9 to 10. She got to grow hair again! And she got to go on vacation. And it was on that vacation that she had some back pain.
When they returned from vacation, she returned to Nebraska Medicine for tests and it was clear that her tumor was “resprouting”. Her cancer is back.
She has already undergone surgery. She is now in chemotherapy, again.
Daisy is EXACTLY like she is in her videos. A badass. A bright light. And wise beyond her years. So I think, as Daisy approaches her 11th birthday (on April 6th) we should shower her with goodness.
And that’s where ALL of you come in.
You know the who: Daisy.
Now let’s talk about the what: Daisies.
When I went through treatment, I received a handmade bouquet of construction paper flowers from my dear friend, Kayla, and her nieces and nephews. They are bright, colorful, each-one-unique flowers that I still have in my office. I love them. And — bonus — they never die.
Daisy loves daisies. So much, in fact, that she wants to start her own daisy garden.
So. For Daisy’s upcoming bday, let’s shower her with flowers. Any kind of interpretation of daisies/flowers is great. Be creative! Have your kids sit down on a Saturday morn and get to work on a flower for Daisy. And then, stick it in the mail before April 1st to the address at the end of this post. I will probably just have my boys make her flowers out of bright colored construction paper. One mom mentioned having her kids make her daisy bracelets. Another, a daisy headband. One friend wants to do a wood sign. It could be your little one’s drawings. Another mentioned watercolors! Whatever your interpretation is. It can be anonymous or it can have your name on it. It can include a note to Daisy or none. There is no right way to go about giving goodness. It is just good to do and give joy, I think.
If you’re not the creative type but you really want to gift a little something to Daisy for her special day, a few gift ideas for this little darling include:
-iTunes gift cards
-Arts/craft supplies
-Daisy seeds {sweet Daisy wants to grow her own daisy garden}
– Real daisies, sent to her. Please see bottom of this post for information on sending daisies to Daisy.
And of course, Daisy and her family will take your prayers ALLLLLL day long.
Daisy probably doesn’t even know who I am. This is going to be a surprise for her from all good hearts. Let’s shower this girl with happiness for her 11th bday!!
