Ugh. Looking at the date of my last post makes me seriously stop and wonder where the summer has gone. As you know, I started working part-time in late June and since then, I’ve completed a Walk, Sorority Recruitment, a family weekend of Czech festivities and of course, Barrett has started going to “school” (that’s right, I’m in denial) three days of the week — much to his chagrain. Also, in the time that has passed, Barrett has had two and half weeks of virus-fever-coldish-teething-red bottomed crud that has made for some interesting dinner times, diaper changes and nights.
Before I begin posts on other happenings, I want to catch you up on all things pertaining to our little Boy Wonder.
- On August 6th, Barrett reached the 18 month mark and according to our dear Dr. D, he is one happy, bright young boy. For the first time in Barrett’s existence, he’s so close to being on an actual growth curve, he can taste it! He weighed 21.5 pounds and was 30 inches long. At this rate, Dr. Dek believes B will be on par at 22 months. Thinking back, it was a long road getting here for only taking 18 months time.
- Barrett is getting much more chatty these days saying many more things that make sense and often imitates words we say. While Adam garners the respect of being called daddy, B has taken to calling me, what we can only assume to be, Ash. When Adam says “let’s look for mommy” or if I am in a different room, Barrett will walk around yelling “Ash!” “Ash!”.
- Barrett throws a fit each day when he is dropped off at school and is happy as a clam within 5 minutes.
- Our sweet little social bug gives kisses and cuddles freely and randomly at home and at school. His teachers recently told me that he was likely preparing for a role in politics as he kisses babies and doles out high fives like it’s his job.
- He signs thank you for please and thank you but it really looks more like he’s blowing kisses. This prompts people he’s telling thank you to think he’s blowing them kisses. This results in many awwws.
- Diaper changes continue to be the bane of Barrett’s existence. True to toddleritis, he hates being “made” to do anything.
- He’s discovered his penis. Hilarious.
- He loves to clap and dance to music and is happiest when we are singing or dancing. He especially enjoys our own modified version of “Big Red Car” from the Wiggles (thank you, Grandpa).
- He is a daddy’s boy … more on that to come.
- Barrett likes to “hum” along with us as we sing “toys away” (yes, we sing…together. we’re cool like that.)
- He continues to have great fervor for reading. On my days off, we generally read every single book he can find. He loves the “If you give a … a …” series and anything with animals.
- Upon direction from his father, our sweet toddler loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and while TV is a rarity for Barrett, any chance he has to see the hot dog dance is a joyful occasion.
- Still eats very few things on a regular basis — your guess is as good as mine as to what he will enjoy from day to day. Breakfast is definitely the highlight of his day.
- An ever-drooling fool, Barrett has nearly all of his teeth in and is working on the toughies.
- Barrett loves to bonk his head into ours and then giggles like crazy. It kind of reminds me of the movie Parenthood where Steve Martin’s kid runs around with a bucket on his head while his niece is reciting the hardest word she knows.
- Barrett “prays” with us at dinner and bedtime by reaching out and holding our hands before our meal and then at bedtime clasping his little hands just like we do. It’s probably one of the most innocent little displays of perfection I’ve ever seen.
I don’t know if it’s the time of the year or if it’s truly this stage we’re at with Barrett, but I love this age and think that it’s probably why people have more children. Even though it presents different challenges as Barrett learns of independence, I appreciate the opportunity to watch him become a “person”. Oh boy … such a joy.
