Last year, the hubs and I wrote a little ditty for the Oldest as he headed off to Kindergarten. Our list of advice for the year ahead as well as for life. That post, Barrett’s ABCs for Kindergarten, is still one of my faves. In fact, I read it to him tonight after he was tucked in and he gave me a huge hug and kiss afterward.
So this year, I asked the Oldest to help a momma out. “I want you to tell me what Kindergarteners should know, B.”
So to all the kiddos heading to Kindergarten, today Barrett is taking over the blog and sharing his ABCs of Advice for the year ahead.
……………………………………………………………………………………………..
Everything you need to know for Kindergarten {from the mouth of Barrett. Verbatim.}
Always ask a teacher for help if you need it.
Be nice.
Clean your desk. If your teachers ask you to keep your projects where they are, keep them where they are.
Do not be a bully.
Encourage yourself.
Friends help each other.
Great days are for sharing. Tell your parents about school.
Have fun! {Can you put an exclamation point after that?- The Oldest}
It’s okay to be scared.
Just work on it even if you can’t get it right the first time. Work on it.
Keep your hands to yourself.
Listen. Learn. And get better.
Make believe.
Nothing’s perfect.
Open a book and if you don’t know if you’ll like it right away keep reading. You’ll probably like it.
Please’s friend is thank you.
Quiet in the hall.
Raise your hand.
Spell your name first and then start trying other words.
Talking loudly at lunch leads to a yellow cup and then, if you’re not quieter, a red cup.
Use things wisely. Like if you are working on a project, use that paper for the project wisely.
Very Important: Enjoy getting to be with great friends.
Wear tennis shoes on PE day or you have to sit out.
Xtra good behavior gets a ticket.
You might get hungry if you don’t eat your lunch! {Can you put an exclamation point after that one, too? – the Oldest}
Zip up your coat when you’re going outside and it’s cold.

So, there you have it. Your kindergarten survival guide from a veteran.
Oh, the Oldest. The kid cracks me up {also, I totally recommend everyone do this activity if you think it sounds fun… it’s pretty incredible to see a kid’s mind at work… and also pretty hilarious.}. I re-read him our list from last year before bed tonight, after he’d completed his, and he was very excited that some of his bits of advice were the same as ours. And of course, so was mama for knowing that our brainwashing parenting is somewhat effective.
So off to first grade will go the Oldest. And the Middlest to his second of three years in Pre-School. And tonight, I find myself so thankful for their schools and their teachers and the years they each had last school year. And unlike last year, I feel nothing but excitement. It’s a good feeling to have. But to the mamas and the papas sending kiddos to school for the first time tomorrow, much love and luck to you, friends. If you are feeling anxious, uneasy, or emotional, I totally feel you. And I hope that you, too, look back a year from now and are excited for what’s to come.
