Hey hey! New year, new blog feature. I gotta keep it fresh around here, you know? I can’t just blah blah motherhood… blah blah cancer… and expect you to keep comin’ around. So, a few new things in the hopper for 2016.
So, today, I’m sharing with you another one of MY SPACES. In my first My Spaces post, I shared our multi-purpose front room. And once again, before I go any further, let me once again go on record stating: I AM NOT A DESIGNER. In fact, I am sort of godawful at design. BUT… I do want to share my spaces with you because I feel like we are on a pretty personal level at this point — what, with your knowledge of my boobs and my baby-making parts.
So today’s space is…
The Bar!
Belly up, belly up to the bar boys… better loosen your belts! Do you know what movie that is from? My sister toooooootallly will. Without a doubt. But who else knows? I mean, besides me, of course.
When we were house hunting, I so did not want a finished basement. I needed wide open spaces. Room for the boys to make their big mistakes. But really. Honestly. I did not want a finished basement. And whyyyyy???? you might ask… well, because unfinished basements are amazeballs when you have littles who need to burn off steam. From riding their bikes to bouncing the day away in the bounce house, little boys can work off all their energy even in the dead of winter when your basement is unfinished.
But alas… the house we fell for had a finished basement. And I had no idea how much I’d love it. Because the boys still hang out down here. Probably even moreso, in fact.
And I love having a pseudo-bar space… not only for all the entertaining I plan to do once we oust this cancer sitch but also so my husband has a place to put all his liquor and collection of shot glasses.
It’s not a “full bar”, I suppose. You can’t walk behind it and play Cheers. But it’s a great setup for serving food while watching games and it houses a good amount of glassware and snacks.
I love this sign. My parents purchased it as a housewarming gift for us and said, “We can just see Adam mixing drinks at the new bar.” And, since the hubs is a huge whiskey fan, it it just perfect. And if you’re wondering where it came from… it was purchased at the Czech Festival in my hometown in one of those little street booths.
The previous owners finished out the basement about 18 months prior to selling. I love the countertops. I love the cupboard finish they chose. And I even think the sink and faucet are pretty fun. Especially given the bar vibe. The little “bar” sign also came from my parents. Also from Czech Days:).
This shelving piece, purchased from Pottery Barn, was not intended for shot glasses but I thought it would be the perfect way to display some of Adam’s faves that he’s collected over the years. And it would go well with the rest of the bar vibe. So, we went with it.
And while I, myself, never would have selected the red lights that actually appear silver when they are shut off, the former owner had exquisite taste and so, I pretty much dig the fixtures. Who knew?
See… silver with just a bit of red when turned off…
The floor was a perfect thought… it’s tile that looks like wood and that means that cleaning up after shaken drinks is easy peasy.
The red light special. All through the night.
And that’s it. That’s the whole Brehm Bar. Nothin’ too fancy but it suits our fancy and that’s really what a home should be. A place that you love to call yours. And a place that feels like home.
